Chapter 13

Tuesday January 4, 2005

Shamara’s Home

“Oh Fred, you shouldn't have,” Shamara exclaimed gratefully after opening her front door to find Homicide Detective Frederick Patterson standing there holding a dozen long-stemmed yellow roses and a heavy envelope. “Make yourself at home. I’ll get coffee.”

She had woken up early that morning, and after having a hot cup of coffee in front of the living room TV while checking the weather and road conditions, she threw on an old Cubs shirt and jeans and proceeded to clean every room in her two-bedroom flat. She’d been mopping the kitchen floor when Fred knocked at the door.

“Flowers aren’t from me, boss lady.” Fred dumped his jet-black, overweight frame onto the sofa. “They were delivered to the precinct earlier today with this envelope. Had your name on it, figured I’d bring them by.”

Shamara returned from the kitchen with two steaming cups of coffee, gave Fred one, and settled into her vintage leather armchair, legs curled beneath her.

“How’s Chris?” Fred inquired. He snagged an Ebony magazine from the table and began leafing through the pages.

“He’s gonna be restricted to a wheelchair for about six months, but other than that, he’s fine. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery.”

“Good to hear. Have you learned anything more about that Dion Spells character?”

“Nothing. I hear he was indicted last year on a Brinks truck robbery and murder, but was subsequently acquitted. To be honest, I haven’t even looked into it yet. Too busy traveling back and forth from the hospital, visiting Chris.”

Fred closed the magazine and tucked it beside him. “Reason I asked is because I just got a lead from some big time dealer.” He suddenly chuckled, “A new informant of mine. Claims he can help us nail that Spells fucker.”

“Why’d you laugh?”

“Well for one, the guy has no reason to rat Spells out. I mean, I didn’t even know the guy. We have nothing on him. He just called and volunteered to help. And for two, the guy has the most humorous name this side of Lake Michigan."

”What’s his name?” Shamara dropped her feet to the carpet and leaned forward, interested.

“Fat Body!” He laughed again. “Isn’t that one for the books? Guy says Spells was responsible for that bombing last week. You know, the one that killed those Gangster Disciples.”

Shamara shook her head and set the porcelain coffee mug on the table. “How could an eighteen-year old cause so much mayhem? I bet he doesn’t lose a wink of sleep over any of these senseless murders. You should’ve seen the look on his face the night Chris was shot. He had a hole in his arm and the brains of the girl he’d been having sex with was splattered all over his sweater, yet he was as calm as can be, like nothing had even happened.”

Fred shrugged and wriggled out of his brown leather bomber jacket. “It’s how they’re raised now. The gangs raise most of the street kids nowadays. Killers breed killers, ya know. Cruel world.” He picked up the envelope from the table and tossed it to Shamara.
